A Moroccan highlight: the very special annual music festival in Fès

Fès Festival of World Sacred Music

Now that we are all thinking of travelling again, keep an eye on any announcements coming out of Fes in Morocco. While the planned June staging of the 2021 Fès Festival of World Sacred Music has been postponed, if the stars are in alignment, it may be staged later this year.

The Festival is remarkable for the diversity of talented musicians that it attracts year after year. As a result, the focused programme presents a combination of well-known and less familiar names, traditional performances as well as experimental ones. It’s a great opportunity to discover your next new favourite.

There are big concerts, and small intimate performances, all presented in fascinating locations. Bab Al Makina square, under the trees in the Bartha Museum gardens, and quite a few secret buildings in the medina, all provide stages with backdrops that are hard to surpass. You’ll never want to sit in a formal concert hall again.

A terrific taster of the 2017 Fes Festival of World Sacred Music performances

Since it is a small festival with many performances spread over a week, a further bonus is that you inevitably see familiar faces after a short while, which offers the chance to strike up a few good conversations about music, Morocco, and magical moments.
