Al Shindagha Museum, Dubai
A museum that truly appeals to all five senses. Your sense of smell will be especially rewarded at the Perfume House, where the importance of scent in local culture is explored.
This open-air museum is located on the Dubai Creek in the historic Al Shindagha district, at the point where Old Dubai meets the Arabian Gulf.
It was formed from over 150 historic buildings that originally served as houses, mosques, work areas, meeting places, watchtowers, and palace for the community who lived there.
The stories explore Emirate cultural heritage, and Dubai’s place in the wider world. There are 22 themed pavilions exploring life on land, culture of the sea, traditional food, perfume, poetry, crafts, and faith and the community.
Overseen by Dubai Culture, the overarching design was executed by GSM Project, and pavilions were developed in phases by a number of museum consultancies. The overall impression reflects this diversity of interpretation and design, whilst still retaining a strong single identity overall.
Annette Welkamp worked on the initial development of Al Shindagha Museum as part of her responsibilities at Dubai Tourism.
