Museum of Photography, Marrakech

Cocooned in the heart of the Souk Al Fes in Marrakech is an astounding private initiative. Just a small selection of the large collection is only ever able to be shown in this traditional riad, but the combined context and the content, creates quite an impact. The Maison de la Photographie de Marrakech is an immersive experience, in the original sense of the phrase.

Created originally by the bringing together of two substantial private archives of images of Morocco and Africa, the collection of photographs, glass plates, postcards, documents, and films, continues to be added to. Hamid Mergani and Patrick Manac’h established this museum in order to share the extraordinary cultural and creative diversity of the region. Their focus is on works ranging from the early days of photography through to 1960. The strength and variety of work shown in the temporary exhibition programme is evidence of the richness of the collection.

This idiosyncratic museum provides a lively counterpoint to the slick and modern Museum of African Contemporary Art and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum also in Marrakech.
